Adventure #5 - Castle of Good Hope
A walk through History!
Today's adventure is one I feel every person needs to experience, if not for the history behind this destination then for the beautiful architectural structure that is De Goede Hoop (Castle of Good Hope).
As we enter the gates and head towards the enormous walls a feeling of awe strikes, or shall I say that's what struck me.
The structure was built in the 17th Century and is the oldest colonial building in South Africa, it was originally built as a rest stop for ships traveling from Europe to Asia but was later "rebuilt" as a fortress for defense when tensions between Netherlands and England started to build up.
As the years went on the fort was used for various other purposes, some of which were very dark.
Walking through this magnificent landmark I could almost feel the history and stories held between the walls and the experience left me wanting to know more about what happened here.
Lucky for me the internet is a wonderful place, from facts to ghost stories there is no shortage of information about it.
The entry fee of R50.00 is a very reasonable price to pay as you can also participate in a guided tour of the majority of the grounds and after you can venture off and see everything open to the public for yourself. It is also one of the more affordable tourist attractions in Cape Town, my only advice would be that if you travel there in your vehicle park inside the castle parking lot for your piece of mind.
Thanks for following our journeys and see you soon.
